Make the Most of a Spare Room
By Jeannette Brown
If you’re lucky enough to have extra space in your home in the form of an unused spare room, then turning it into a multipurpose space that can still accommodate overnight visitors is a great way to show off the versatility of your home to potential buyers, as well as improve your living arrangements by rethinking how the space can best be used in your life. Maybe you want to devote a spare room to just one focus, or perhaps you want it to have three functions, with a mix of office, guest, and music space. Whatever suits your lifestyle, considering your options is an important first step to transforming your space and maximizing your home’s marketability.
Here are a few options for you to make the most of your home’s spare room:
Home Office More people are choosing to work from home, and as Americans notoriously work long hours, having a reserved space at home to tackle projects, or even just your bills and personal finances can be a great way to stay organized and leave your favorite spots at home uncluttered. Home offices have broad appeal. Hang shelves to organize files and papers and you can still have room for a sofa bed, where a guest can spend the night while visiting.
Reading Room / Library It might be every book lover’s dream to have their own personal library, and if you enjoy growing your collection, a dedicated room away from it all can be a perfect place to get some serious reading done. A distraction-free zone oriented around books can be inspiring and will also free up space elsewhere in the house if books are stacking up all over the place. A wall of shelving and soothing colors are key first steps, and one can’t forget the perfect reading chair.
Entertainment Room If you think of your spare room as your very own movie theater, then an entertainment room might be ideal. The perfect television, surround sound, and video game console are all aspects you might want to consider. A projector and screen are another option for your movie viewings. You might also want to consider a music room, if you are musically-inclined and want a space to practice your instruments. After all, many instruments can take up a lot of space, so a spare room is an ideal place to store them.
Playroom If you have children (or one on the way), a popular option is to give kids a space of their own that will allow them to be creative, messy, and playful. After all, you probably don’t want toys, crayons, and games scattered all over the living room floor. Plenty of storage space will be important for keeping the room tidy. Bright, happy colors will make the space more fun.
Hobby Room If you’re a serious about crafts, scrapbooking, or even airplane models, then having a space for your passion in life can be a fun way to make the most of a room. For instance, you might want an organized setup for all your tools and supplies so that they’re within easy reach.
